Rebates == Deliberate Swindle?

This article and the ones it reference reveal the dirty little secret of the rebate industry - the rebate companies have a strong financial incentive NOT to pay you.

Given that, and given that you have no idea whether your rebate request will be honored, lost, mired in red tape or simply shredded and ignored, rebates suddenly seem to be a very, very bad business.

I think the key is asking yourself this question when buying a product w/a mail-in rebate. "Would I still buy this if the rebate form was deliberately lost by the rebate company and it would take a lawsuit to get the rebate money out of them?" If the answer is no, don't buy it!
