Swanson's Rules of Management - Rule 4
Look for what is missing. Many know how to improve what's there; few can see what isn't there.
This is one of the keys of innovation. Kathy Sierra had some great insight along the same lines when she talks about How to come up with breakthrough ideas.
This is also the mantra of Seth Godin and you can read about in Purple Cow or The Big Moo. Find out how to solve a problem a new way, or, even better, find out how to find an opportunity when no one else sees a problem at all.
Skip Angel has a practical post about this concept as well, in the context of taking a vacation.
Update: This pull quote thing works, at best, haphazardly. Ugh.
