Michael Crichton on complexity
Software development is (usually) a complex system. Scrum and XP were developed to manage that complexity, using continuous feedback, openness and collaboration.
Back in November, Michael Crichton gave a speech about complexity in the real world. It will probably annoy many readers, because he casually guts some sacred cows, but I for one suspect he is right. The natural world is too complex for us to make any claim to control, or to know "how to fix it". Just like software!
